Leo Laporte (one of my favorite podcasters) got the creatives from Wieden + Kennedy on the air and interviewed them about the making of the now famous Old Spice commercial (which I blogged about earlier).

There was $100 riding on the question as to whether or not CG was used throughout the spot. C’mon. You were wondering how they made it, weren’t you?

You can watch the interview for the answer or check below the video where I’ll spill the beans.

SPOILER: Leo lost $100. The only CG element in the entire thing was the diamonds and the bottle coming up out of his hand and “Photoshopping” an element out of the final shot. Most impressive.

Perhaps you saw the bold move by Dove to branch into men’s products with this ad:

Old Spice responded with this:

Point to Old Spice. Why? Well, it’s a lot easier to talk to a target demographic if you’re brand is already built up around said demographic. Dove was making a huge leap from decades of speaking to women to try and speak to men without alienating or venturing too far from the brand that’s made them what they are. Old Spice has always been about men so it’s more of a natural fit.

That and the writing is just flat-out better on the Old Spice ad.

I’d seen this technique before, but this is the first time I’ve seen it used for something more than eye candy.

That’s the way to do it. Eye candy is great (especially if it’s the first time someone has seen it) but taking something and making it a useful tool for your customers is going to have more lasting results. Creative stuff.

Here’s the attack in all its majesty (turn up your speakers – it’s kind of quiet). I particularly like the slo-mo at the end. What do you think? Was it worth the two shop vacs, three man-hours of cleanup, two showers and a trip to the dry cleaners that it required? Let us know in the comments below.

As an aside, we just published the Richter7 Social Media Glossary.
